The K-rules in reverse: strip the Thai spelling back toward the Indic form it came from. This is a guess from the rules, not a lookup — it shows you what the orthography is hiding.
ใช้กฎ K ย้อนกลับ คือถอดตัวสะกดไทยกลับไปหารูปเดิมในภาษาบาลี–สันสกฤต ผลที่ได้เป็น การคาดคะเนจากกฎ ไม่ใช่การเปิดพจนานุกรม แต่ช่วยให้เห็นสิ่งที่ตัวสะกดเก็บซ่อนไว้

The Thai script descends from Brahmi (India, 3rd c. BCE) through the Pallava script of South India, carried across the Bay of Bengal with Sanskrit, then through Old Khmer — the script of Angkor, whose empire ruled the Chao Phraya basin before the Tai states rose.
Tradition credits King Ram Khamhaeng of Sukhothai, 1283, with reshaping Khmer letters into ลายสือไทย 'Thai writing'. (The famous Inscription One that tells this story has itself been the subject of a long authenticity controversy — know the debate exists.) Two genuine innovations stand out: vowels written on the main line, and the world's first tone marks — no earlier script anywhere marked tone.
Why 44 consonants for ~21 consonant sounds? Because the alphabet kept the entire Sanskrit varga grid — the voiced, voiceless, aspirated, and retroflex distinctions of Indic — even where Thai never pronounced them apart. Those "redundant" letters are the etymological tracer-dyes of rule K1. Two letters (ฃ ฅ) have died; the rest soldier on.
Then came the Great Tone Split (roughly 15th–17th c.): Thai devoiced its voiced consonants, and the old voicing contrast was reborn as tone differences. The three consonant "classes" of modern Thai are fossilized voicing: high class = old voiceless aspirates & fricatives, mid = old plain voiceless, low = old voiced. The tone rules feel arbitrary until you know this — then they are just the ghost of a sound change.
Thai alphabetical order IS Sanskrit phonological order: each row (วรรค) is one place of articulation — unvoiced, unvoiced-aspirate, voiced, voiced-aspirate, nasal. Color = tone class: high · mid · low.
ลำดับพยัญชนะไทยก็คือลำดับทางเสียงของสันสกฤตนั่นเอง แต่ละวรรคคือฐานกรณ์หนึ่งฐาน เรียงจากอโฆษะสิถิล อโฆษะธนิต โฆษะสิถิล โฆษะธนิต แล้วจบด้วยนาสิก สีแสดงหมู่อักษร: สูง · กลาง · ต่ำ

Tone = initial's class × syllable type × tone mark. Live = ends in vowel/sonorant; dead = ends in -k -t -p or short vowel. IPA tone letters here: ˧ mid · ˨˩ low · ˥˩ falling · ˦˥ high · ˩˥ rising.

Romanization is strict RTGS (the official standard on road signs).
การถอดอักษรไทยเป็นโรมันในที่นี้ใช้ ระบบราชบัณฑิตยสภา (RTGS) อย่างเคร่งครัด ซึ่งเป็นระบบเดียวกับที่ใช้บนป้ายจราจร

RTGS does not mark tone or vowel length — it is a locator system. The IPA toggle and 🔊 buttons carry what it drops. Search is tone- and aspiration-insensitive, so panya, punya, and bhanya all reach ปัญญา — it matches on the consonant skeleton, the same trick Wehr's root order plays on Arabic.

Ordinary dictionaries sort words A–Z, so ปัญญา, วิญญาณ, and สัญญา live pages apart. This one sorts by root: all three sit under √jñā "know", and you learn the system, not just the words — the way the classic Hans Wehr dictionary organized Arabic.

Root families are editorially assembled: an Indic root or a native head morpheme, then the Thai words that derive from it, glossed and annotated. Assignments follow standard Indological practice (Pali/Sanskrit verbal roots as given in the Pali Text Society and Monier-Williams traditions). Where a derivation is contested or the Thai word's route in is disputed, it is tagged debated rather than smoothed over.
Every derivative carries a confidence tag and source codes. verified means the etymology was cross-checked against Thai Wiktionary's independent entry and agreed. standard means it is the mainstream assignment but has not been checked against a second source in this edition. debated means sources disagree or the derivation is traditional rather than demonstrated. CUR = editorial, WIKT = corroborated by Thai Wiktionary.
Romanization and IPA are machine-generated (tltk) and contain occasional errors on rare compounds. Frequency tiers come from the Thai National Corpus and reflect written Thai. The candidate list is machine-clustered and unedited by design. The Thai-language text has not yet had a native-speaker editorial pass — corrections are very welcome.
